ABC Introduction to Daruma San

"For centuries Zen masters have said that Daruma is Zen. Perhaps it would now be appropriate to say that Daruma is Japan. In neither case is the definition fully explicable or applicable. Each is essentially a KOAN whose solution is acessible only to experience, not to rational analysis. This is to assert finally that Daruma is one key to an authentic and rewarding experience of Japan and the Japanese people."

These are the final words of Prof. McFarland in his classic about Daruma in Popular Japanese Culture. Zen and Daruma have always been very close to me since my first steps in Japanese Archery (弓道) in 1977 in Kamakura. My first purchase was a huge seated Daruma statue, which had to spend a long time on our television set, since the house was so small. Now he got his promised space in our large farmhouse compound, the Paradise Hermitage (GokuRakuAn 極楽庵) in Okayama Prefecture, where we moved in 1995.

I have written two books about Buddhist art and Buddhist ritual implements in German, if you are interested, please contact me.

Towards the end of 2001 I was lucky to encounter Mr. Kyobashi and his fantastic homepage, so I started to write some stories about Daruma myself. I intend to continue this with his valuable help and I want to take this opportunity to thank him very very much for his support. If you have any suggestions or Darumas to share, please contact us.

My stories have three sections:
  1. Daruma Hunting in various parts of Japan as we travel along.
  2. Introducing the most famous Daruma temples and the markets there.
  3. ABC introduction of all kinds of things in the form of Daruma or with a Daruma painted or carved on them. This will take us through many forms of art and folkart, from ceramics to childrens toys, just as Prof. McFarland noted: A tour through Japan and the Japanese People. I will use the Internet as the main medium for this trip. If you have a special subject you want to be covered, please let me know.

Now let me introduce some books about Daruma.
Best and foremost for English speakers of course

・McFarland, H. Neill.
Daruma: The Founder of Zen in Japanese Art and Popular Culture.
Tokyo & NY: Kodansha International, 1987. (Out of print)

This book really tells it all. It also has a calendar with the major Daruma Festivals and Markets, which we will eventually explore in the WWW during these stories.

By the way, on this HP you find a lot more books about popular subjects of Japan.

    ・Daruma to sono shosoo
Tokyo Heigo Shuppan-sha 1932
It has more than 850 pages, but unfortunately it has very little illustrations in black and white.

A shorter version of this one is
    ・Ko Daruma shuu
Tokyo Murata Shooten 1977
It has about 300 pages, but almost no illustrations.

Another Japanese book which was published in December 2001 is very useful since it has a prefix of 30 pages with a lot of pictures of different types of Daruma Dolls, mostly the papermachee versions.

Next we have the small volume by the priest of the famous Daruma Temple Shorinzan
    ・Yoku Wakaru Daruma San
The first 16 pages are full of pictures of the local papermachee Darumas from all regions of Japan.

Finally another small volume
    ・Daruma no Minzokugaku
Folk Studies, Ethnology about Daruma (Amazon.co.jp)
You find a lot more quotations of useful books in English in McFarlands book.

And of course the following HP by Mr. Kyobashi is a treasure trove for books.

Last but not least let me introduce the Japanese Daruma Association, the Zen Nihon Daruma Kenkyuukai They publish a yearly magazine with a lot of interesting subjects about Daruma art and monthly newsletters full of funny and serious details. Here is the cover of Nr. 12.

Imaizumi Sensei of this Association has written a very useful book about the different types of Daruma in various regions of Japan, which I quote very often in these stories. Unfortunately it has no illustrations.

You can contact the Association through Mr. Tajima or Mr. Nakamura or Mr. Kyobashi right here:

Finally have a look at the Darumadoo (達磨堂) which we built in 1997. It is the starting point of these stories and I hope you will join me as we travel along. Sincerely yours
Gabi
