Ishi (1) - Stones and Daruma

Daruma Ishi and Ishi Daruma
A Stone that looks like Daruma and a Daruma made of Stone. In Part (1) we are mostly concerned with the first type. We will also look at Daruma images crafted from stone and Buddhastatues in cliffs (magaibutsu 磨崖仏) in Part (2).

The picture above shows a pair of "Gods on the Wayside" (doososhin 道祖神) which you can see on this HP.

Daruma as a sculptural stone is represented by what is called a "Daruma stone" (Daruma ishi だるま石), ovoid rocks or nodules perceived as natures own facsimilies of okiagari Daruma. When such a treasure is found, it is either kept in nature as it is or modified only to the extend of polishing a small area to suggest a face and then mounted on a base to hold it upright for display.
Here is one example of a beautifully mounted stone like Daruma. These treasures are called "Look Like Stones" 見立石. You can see the other sides of this stone on the following HP.

The Daruma at Iwahara
On the slopes of the Iwahara Ski resort near Yuuzawa Hot Spring there is a special Daruma Shrine 岩原の達磨神社 with some statues made of stone which resemble Daruma, to pray for the safety of the skiers and the porters.

The Daruma boulder in Misato
In Misato-Cho in Wakayama prefecture there is a riverbed with a huge Daruma stone. It is about 5 to 6 meters high and legend says that a statue of Daruma Daishi had been erected there for prayer. The whole gorge with this stone was therefore called "Daruma Stone Gorge" 達磨石峡谷. The gorge is especially beatutifull in autum.

A Daruma Boulder near Lake Chuuzen-ji
On the shore of lake Chuuzen-ji in the Nikko National Park there is another Daruma stone close to one of the fishing grounds of the area.

On this HP you can see (or rather NOT see) this stone covered in water after a very rainy summer.

The Daruma Boulder at Mitsumine
About 20 minutes from Mitsumine Station at the beginning of the climb towards Mt. Mitsumine there is a large Daruma stone to pray for the safety of the trip. Mitsumine in Yamanashi Prefecture is an ancient area where the mountain ascetics would train in the wilderness. The Daruma stone was interpreted as the Buddha Dainichi of the Womb Mandala 胎蔵界の大日如来 in esoteric Buddhism and seen as the beginning of all things.

The Daruma Stone at Toochiku-in 東竹院の達磨石
In the temple Toochiku-in 東竹院 in Kumagaya, Saitama prefecture, there is a stone that looks like Daruma. It has been washed ashore there after a flood of the unruly river Arakawa. The picture is a little dark, but click on the blue 達磨石 button anyway.

The Daruma Stone on Mount Kenbi-san
This mountain is close to Osaka. Along the climbing path there is a huge grotto with a Daruma stone in an area that has long been a place for mountain ascetic practise. Now this is a mecca for rock climbers. By the way, that is the usual fate of many of the holy areas of theYamabushi ascetics: they get too many worldly visitors like hikers and backpackers. Check out this HP for more wonderful pictures of nature and of other stone Buddhas.

According to Mr. Imaizumi, we have stone Darumas from various stone-producing areas of Japan. If you have samples from the areas mentioned below, please share a picture with us.
I will now introduce just a few areas, maybe there will be more in Part (3).

Makabe-Choo 真壁町 in Ibaragi Prefecture produces Granite stone (花崗岩) articels since the stone age. With the spread of Buddhism, it also produced a lot of stone Buddha statues.

The Ooya area 大谷 close to Utsunomiya in Tochigi prefecture is famous for the Ooya stones. They are carved out from stone cliffs outside and caves inside the cliffs, some caves are really amazing and have been used as storage place for valuable treasures during the World Wars. Nowadays one of these huge caves is a museum worth while visiting.

The huge statue of Kannon Bosatsu in one of the Ooya cliffs was constructed to remind us of peace for the world.

Nearby is the Temple Ooya-ji, Nr. 19 in the Bando Pilgrimage. The stone Buddhas there are chiseled out of the overhanging cliff and you have to strech and bend you neck to see them. This temple was one of my favorite destinations while living in Kamakura. Mashiko with its famous pottery is close by so there is a lot to do in the area.

Akiyoshi-dai 秋吉台 in Yamaguchi Prefecture uses the local limestone (sekkaigan 石灰岩) for stone souveniers, including Darumas. The limestone caves of Akiyoshi-dai are quite famous. Have a look at the local museum too.

The nature of this area is very beautiful, have a look at some flowers.

Here is one little Stone Daruma of this area.

Talking about limestone caves, there is one more area in Okayama prefecture I want to introduce here. First look at this little fellow who is made in China and sold in tourist spots in Japan. I got this one at the cliff caves at Ikuradoo, Okayama prefecture. His beard is painted almost in the fashion of a Yakko, with the beard turing up. They sell this one and many other stone items at the cave entrance.

You can check out about the caves of Ikuradoo and nearby Makidoo on the following HP:
In Ikuradoo you climb up inside a cliff cave along, under and beside a huge waterfall. The way down is over an outside staircase down the cliff, quite a thrilling experience. On a rainy day the caves are closed because the waterfall is just too wild and dangerous.
