In the category of stone sculpture, a crafted image of Daruma is known as a "Stone Daruma" (ishi Daruma 石だるま). These can have various forms, from large-scale figures to smaller-scale works. Sometimes the Daruma features are chiseled into an interestingly shaped stone. Sometimes the face is painted on a smooth, stream-worn pebble. The example above is a little Kannon, which I got from a friend.
石を加工し、形を与えると石だるまになります。川の小石に色で顔を描くのも石だるま。上の例はそういう観音さまです。

Let us look at one Daruma made of stone. He was made in China and is now sold in many stone-producing areas of Japan. I got this one near Tamakatsu from a local stone dealer. This Daruma comes in two sizes and since he is mashine-made, he has many identical brothers.
石でできただるまを見ましょう。こちらの達磨は中国産ですが、高松で売っています。小さいだるま兄弟もありますが機械で仕上げたものですので、大量 生産です。 　

These two Daruma are painted in red and white on stone. The pebbles provide soft shapes on which to paint whimsical renditions of Darumas face. These tow are sold at a temple dedicated to Kooboo Daishi, whom we have met frequently. The Kawasaki Daishi Temple is located close to Tokyo and very famous for the crowds visiting during the first three days of the New Year. I tried once to go there too and had to stand in line from the station for three hours and not yet even reached the entrance gate when we gave up and posponed the visit to February.

This is only the face of a beautiful Daruma of Stone, which I found many years ago in the garden of the Temple Gohyaku Rakan in Odawara. He is as big and looks just like the laquer statue which we saw in the ABC story. Maybe they were made from the same pattern?

Buddhas in Stone Cliffs　 Magaibutsu　 磨崖仏
I will take this chance to tell you a little about Buddha figures chiseled out of stone, the Magaibutsu of Japan. They follow in the tradition of the greate figures along the Silk Road, from the un-famous reliefs of Bamiyan in Afganistan to Dunhuang and others in China.

Here you find a complete list of all Magaibutsu in the area, very good explanations but very few photos. For example the Inukai Stone Buddha, here the example of the Wisdom King, Fudoo.
不動明王の磨崖仏です。室町時代の後でつくられたそうです。
This statue of the image of Acala, 3.76 meters high, does not posses the flaming fire around him, and the style in which his eyes are open wide and round carries the old traditional way. It is assumed that this was made sometime after Muromachi Era.

The 500 Arhats 　Gohyaku Rakan 五百羅漢
Twenty long years were spent by a mason from Hiji-machi Town in carving this. It was done at the order of the 15th chief priest during the latter half of the Edo period. 538 bodies stand close to one another on a slanting surface.

Stone Buddhas
Oita has a wealth of Buddhist figures carved into mountainsides and sculpted from stone. The group of 75 figures in the mountainside in the area of Usuki City (the Usuki Magaibutsu) is a National Treasure. The immense Kumano figures (Kumano Magaibutsu at Kitsuki) are also famous, and the 3,770 stone images at the Rakan-ji temple (Nakatsu) attract much attention.

This area was famous for Magaibutsu since the late Heian period. Three medallions of the Kamakura period are visible on the cliff face; they are carved with Sanscrit characters representing Fudo, Comet, and Yakushi. Two additional medallions, now weathered, represent Eclipse and Bishamon. The combination of deities has astronomical and astrological and protective significance, in keeping with the esoteric Buddhist (Tendai) affiliation of the shrine. The Big Yakushi Buddha at the Nihon-ji Temple in Chiba Prefecture. He is 31 meters high. This temple is easily reached from Tokyo by ferryboat from Kurihama to Kanaya and then up the Nokogiri mountain by cablecar. The whole area with its many stone statues is well worth a daytrip.
